Build-a-Bird Sock Puppet Workshop- Part 1 of 2

We will first look at how human tools and bird beaks do similar jobs. Birds have adapted to their climates and habitats, which is reflected in their beaks, feet, and plumage.

With this knowledge, each participant will choose a regional species of bird that is threatened. These birds will be the Horned Grebe, the Barn Owl, the Whippoorwill, the Evening Grossbeak, and the Northern Bob-white.

Each child will receive a kit with all the pieces needed to build their bird puppets.

Bird Puppets Stand Up to the Man- Public Service Announcements - Part 2 of 2

To further learn about the bird puppet that we created in the earlier workshop, we will animate and create voices for our birds. Alone or in groups, the birds will be developing a “script” for a public service announcement (think the Hinterland Who’s Who “commercials”). They will talk about their species and why it is endangered.

These will be filmed and shared on various media platforms. Though the information is important to share, more significantly, these PSAs are designed to demonstrate to the participants that their voices are important and that they can make positive environmental change. The goal is to empower the children with tools and knowledge to fight for what they believe in, and to build their self-advocacy skills and self-confidence.

If participants were unable to be part of the earlier puppet-building workshop, there will be extra bird puppets available to use.
